GOD AND GENDER SPECIFIC LANGUAGE PDF Print E-mail

This is an excellent article by Simon Chan about the necessity of calling God "Father"-

"For at least the past 40 years, traditional language for God has come under fire. While formal feminist theologians disagree about what language to use instead, they are unanimous that masculine words for God, especially Father, must be expunged from our theological vocabulary. For the church to be inclusive, they argue, it must replace man-centered language with language that accounts for both male and female. Furthermore, since our human words cannot adequately portray God's fullness, no single characterization will suffice. God could be addressed as father and/or mother in order to bring out his multifaceted nature."

God uses evil to do good [usually to punish or conquer evil, sometimes to test and strengthen faith and character]

Does this mean the ends justifies the means?

Acts 4:27 against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

Romans 9:17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, for this purpose have I raised thee up,

Genesis 45:7 And God sent me before you to save your lives –Joseph said after the fact

Genesis 50:20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. -same

God has caused evil

Isaiah 10:6 I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. 7 Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

1Kings 22:22 And the Lord said …I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. 23 Now therefore, behold, the Lord hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil concerning thee.

2Samuel 16:10 Lord hath said unto him, Curse David.

Acts 4:27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

2Kings 8:12 13 …The Lord hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria. And Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child.

Secondary Causes [almost everything God does, He does through means. Occasionally, but rarely, He works miracles, i.e.- acts directly apart from secondary causes]

Isaiah 10:6 I will send him (the rod of my anger, the club of my fury-v.5)against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. 7 Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few. [et al]

Free will choices

[Most all these stories used here seem to be of people exercising free choice; but often the Spirit of God or the Spirit of Evil is at work on another level- “concurrence”]

God preserves Creation- holding it all together

Hebrews 1:3 and upholding all things by the word of his power,

Acts 17:25 he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being;

God knows all- these texts say that God has knowledge of all that is; but they do not say anything about knowledge of the future (although here are many verses that prophecy future events) These verses do not say God’s knowledge changes or is conditional. However, God Himself does not change and He is perfect. Wouldn’t that mean He learns nothing new?

Matthew 10:29 one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

Acts 15:18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.

Psalm 94:8 10 he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know? 11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity

John 21:15 Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee… Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee
