God is a Creator, an Artist, and Image maker. It is clear that God has a Mind and thinks in a rational manner. But we must not emphasize the rationality of God to the neglect of other attributes. God is spiritual, communal and moral, as well as rational. That God is also creative and artistic is the very first thing God reveals about Himself in the Bible.  At the very least, this means we should value and enjoy creativity and being creative like He does

A Word Study-

The Hebrew word translated here as "create" is "bara" [bah RAH] It means to shape, fashion or create. The first thing we learn about God in the Bible is that He shapes, fashions and creates. He is an Artist, a designer, a "craftsman".

Synonyms for create (bara):

Make = asah [awe-SAW] - 1:7,21+25, 26-27, 31 + 2:4 6:7 Exo 20:1; see Isa 45:7

Form = yatsar 1:27 + 2:7, 7-8,19, 14:19; Ps 139:13; Prov 8:22, Isa 45:7

Fashion = kuwn= frimly establish- Job 31:5, Psalm 119:73

Metaphors for create:

Spreads out - Job 37:18; Isa 44:24

Stretched out - Isa 40:22, 44:24; Jer 10:12

Firmly established - Ps 93:1, 96:10

Set in place - Ps 8:3; Gen 1:17; 1 Sam 2:8 + Zech 12:1

Objects created besides the Cosmos and everything in it!

God created [bara] the nation Israel -Isa 43:1,15

God creates each believer -Eph 2:10 cf 2 Cor 5:17

God creates well-being & calamity -Isa. 45:7-8

God creates a new heart & spirit within the believer Ps 51:10

God will create new heavens & earth -Isa 65:17-19

Reasons God created

1. By choice, not necessity

2. The glory of Christ - Col 1:15-18

3. God’s glory - Rom 11:36; Ps 19:1f; Ps 103:22; Ps 148:1-10

4. God’s enjoyment - He said, “it is good, very good”

God’s Joy in the process of Creation and in the Creation Itself

The Book of Proverbs is about Wisdom [chokmah khok·MA]. It is personified- made to sound as though it were a woman. She, Wisdom, was present at creation, i.e.- God delighted in wisdom and used it when He designed the world. cf ability, intelligence, knowledge and craftsmanship in Exo 31:3, 35:31.

8:27 When [God] established the heavens, I [Wisdom] was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, 29 when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, 30 then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, 31 rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man.

The Value of what God created

Everything in the Natural World, as made by God, is “good”, “very good”.

“Good” can mean-

1. Acceptable, well-made, “beautiful” – cf. Psalm 139:14; Isa 41:7

2. Intrinsically good  All things as made by God reflect God. All creation reveals God- is a witness to His power and mind, therefore, they are “good” - Psalm 19:1 cf Rom 1:20 etc

3 “good” also means that which benefits human life. “Evil” is the opposite: that which destroys, harms or hurts human life - see Gen 2:9, 17; 3:11+ 22; 50:20 and 45:4-8

All that God made (the entire physical universe, earth/land, sea and all that grows on it or in it, and all creatures on land or in sea and air) are still, today, “good”, ie- beneficial to human life -Ps 8:3-8

Note: this does not mean there was no physical death before the Fall. God created what we call the "food chain" in which there must be death and decay to make physical life possible. Many creatures were designed and equipped to kill and eat other creatures, ultimately for the welfare of human beings.(Gen 1:29, 9:3; Psalm 104:15f, 145:15f) The "Death" that came as a result of Sin after the Fall was qualitatively different than the physical "natural" death of plants and animals.(Rom 5:12)
